Museum for straw processing Twistringen

Museum for straw processing in Twistringen - 300 years of straw processing shaped Twistringen. In 1992 energetic volunteers of the Heimat- und Bürgervereins Twistringen e.V. decided to preserve the history of straw in Twistringen for the following generations. A museum was constructed. Collected equipment are being exhibited in the museum in parts in reenacted historical surroundings. During guided tours it is possible to demonstrate the operation of straw processing.

Visitor groups are being lead through the exhibition by experienced museum guides. The demonstrations of historical production processes are being looked after by voluntary helpers. Information boards with historical photos and texts describe historical machines, typical production surroundings and the social conditions in the different historical phases.

As a special museum the straw museum Twistringen concentrates on straw processing which characterised the village in the past: the sewing of straw hats, cutting of straws, production of straw sleeves (bottle transport protection) and other products, some in homework some in small factories.

The development of local machine factories was tightly connected with the Twistringer straw industry. New equipment was constructed continuously for the changing straw products. Because of the close proximity to the straw processing companies solutions were found, which were used for decades. Their products were not only sold in Twistringen and all over Germany. Especially in the 1920ties and 1930ties they received orders from neighbouring countries and from overseas.
From these times stems the low German dictum 'Geit use Stroh in alle Welt ist et um Twustern god bestellt' (Goes our straw around the world Twistringen is well looked after).
