About the history of the Hoher Berg

In the mid-70ties, at the time of the cold war, a defense and missile base was constructed by the US armed forces on the 4,8 hectare large area. Radar balls, which should locate 'the enemy' were standing on concrete tiles on the highest still existing bulwark. In the mid-80ties the Americans left the base and the German soldiers followed in 1987.

In the following years the former military base was used for agriculture. In the year 2004 the town of Syke purchased the area. With EU subsidies the projects 'Kulturlandschaft der Geest' (see information board at the area's entrance) was created. Today the Hohe Berg is a nature experience and nature enjoyment.

From the bulwark, 63m above sea level one can view the diverse Geest landscape, the lowlands of the Hache and further away European nature reserves. Every cardinal point offers a different nature experience. Here at this place you can experience the expanse far way from the noise of civilisation.

In the last years different habitats and micro-climates were newly created, some of them are open to the public.

It is well worth visiting the Hohe Berg - not only because of the unique view onto the Weser's glacial valley and the Hanseatic city Bremen - but also because of the integration into the charming Geest landscape and the unique experience of expanse and nature.

The area is also available for small group celebrations and the fire place may be used (please read the hints). Booking is necessary. Please contact the town of Syke under
